Our Underappreciated Lynchpin

In what’s been a near-faultless Liverpool campaign as of late. There’s definitely a lot of fanfare to be thrown around the players and manager who made this all possible. Everyone has played their part in Liverpool’s excellent start to the year. It’s been stellar for Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Arne Slot, and my boy Ryan Gravenberch. However, there seems to be one key player overlooked at times, and in my opinion, surprisingly so. That player is Alexis Mac Allister. He is arguably our best midfielder and one of the best all-around players on the team. Yet, Macca doesn’t get lumped into the conversations our world-class players like Salah, van Dijk, and even Trent Alexander-Arnold typically garner.

A Blessing In Disguise

ASTV Shorts: The Macca/Grav Double Pivot

Perhaps it’s just my Liverpool bias hearing its horns with this article. It’s natural for any club supporter to want their players propped up to the heavens, deserving or not. The flip side of this is that the further Macca flies under the radar, the better chance we can keep him, at least in theory. We haven’t had his consistent quality in midfield since the days of Steven Gerrard. If we’re looking at the “next generation” of Liverpool players who’ll take the torch from the likes of Salah, VVD, and Alisson, there won’t be many who would argue that Mac Allister is at the
top of that list.

I believe Liverpool’s player of the season to this point remains Ryan Gravenberch (no surprise). But, that belief stems from Mac Allister’s positioning, football IQ, and versatility allowing the Dutchman to thrive. Not taking anything away from Gravenberch of course. His qualities help Mac Allister do his thing as well, making it all the more beneficial for the Reds as a whole, forming the undoubted best midfield partnership in the league thus far.

What Does The Future Hold?

The sky’s the limit for Mac Allister. Even the most hardened Liverpool hater will agree that he’s a supremely talented player. One could argue you could already put him in the world-class category. The key is Liverpool managing to keep ahold of the Argentinian as he approaches his prime years. Interest will inevitably arrive, particularly from the Spanish contingent of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Those clubs have historically been the endgame for the best South American players in the history of the sport.

If Liverpool are successful in tying down Mac Allister towards the end of the decade however, there’s an argument to be made that he can become the Premier League’s best midfielder if he keeps going strength to strength. Obviously, the saying goes that we shouldn’t look too far ahead as it can distract us from what’s in front of our faces. It’s hard not to do so for Macca. He remains a big reason why we’re in the hunt for all four trophies this season.

As Liverpool continues to evolve post-Jurgen Klopp, that initial £35 million we paid to secure the Argentinian’s services is looking more and more like one of the best pieces of business the club has conducted in recent memory. It goes without saying that if we are to win the biggest trophies this season and beyond, it’ll be done with Alexis Mac Allister at the heart of the Liverpool midfield.
