Liverpool’s stunning start to the season continues. Results and performances have been incredible and we are back on our perch at the top of the Premier League. Unfortunately, much of the time, focus, and energy that should be enjoyed being on top has been derided by talk of contracts.

ASTV Shorts: Which Of These Three Contracts Will Be Worked Out First?

Virgil van Dijk was the catalyst that transformed a good Liverpool team into a great one. He brought a sense of calm to a defensive line that would go on to three Champions League finals, and win every possible trophy there is to win in club-level soccer.

Mohamed Salah has become a true Liverpool legend. Goal after goal and record after record has seen Mo Salah become the darling of the Kop and our prized asset. To see all of these goal records tumble from a midfielder is remarkable.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Scouser in our team, has won everything with the team. He is arguably the best passer in the Premier League making him in high demand from Real Madrid.

All three of the above players are invaluable to our title push. We all feel they are irreplaceable. But let’s look at the club’s history to see what the future could hold.

Historical Precedents

John Aldridge replaced Ian Rush. Rush returned from Italy and in time Robbie Fowler usurped him. Stan Collymore divided opinions, but his first season at Liverpool saw him score a lot of goals. Ultimately Michael Owen took over from him.

While it took a while for the club to replace the quality of strikers Owen and Fowler, the superstar quality leading our team was Steven Gerrard. Soon, Fernando Torres emerged only to be supplanted by Luis Suarez. In time he would be replaced by the triumvirate of Salah, Mane, and Firmino. Now we have Gakpo, Diaz, Nunez, Jota and Salah. Players will come and players will go and the club will continue.

As much as we love van Dijk, Salah, and Trent and all want them on new contracts, here is a question:

How many of you would allow all 3 to leave on free transfers if it guaranteed us the Premier League title this season?

We have had great players in the past but have not won the title. Would we trade the great players now for the Premier League Trophy?
