Is Santa a Red?

He’s got the kit basically sorted

That magical time of the year is upon us. Like most children growing up in Ireland, I would go visit Santa every year. As was usual growing up in the eighties, I would ask for a surprise. We would always receive the best surprises from the man in red.

As I grew older and the Santa years dissipated, I would always pick up a Liverpool top and add it to the surprises that I received on Christmas morning.

Requests Of Santa

Once I got married the Santa years would soon return. First of all, it must be debated as to who Mr. Claus truly supports. For me, anyone wearing all red with a hint of white with black boots is a Liverpool fan. He’s wearing a Liverpool kit regardless of whether he has Standard Chartered scrawled across his chest or not.

United fans will surely argue that a big black belt gives a flavor of Old Trafford to his ensemble. I would counter-argue against that by saying his elves wear red and green!

Living in America, for the first few years of my marriage we would visit my family in Ireland every Christmas. When we got there I would always bring my wife to visit Santa. It is from this point I would ask Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick the same question every year. Without hesitation, I’d make one solitary request: the league title.

The answers I received each year evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. The first couple of visits to Ireland brought very diverse answers. One time Santa offered up the Champions League. Another year he asked what would happen if the North Pole was a Manchester United household.

The Magic Of The Season

As a Liverpool fan stateside who has grown into the role of Santa himself, it is refreshing to learn how much easier it has become to acquire Liverpool merchandise on this side of the pond. From 50-60% off with Black Friday sales, purchasing the new kit or jacket/training top is no longer financially prohibitive. Some of the bargains were actually quite impressive this year.

The arrival of children brought a real return to Santa, his elves, and his workshop. When I asked for the league, many were unsure of the intricacies of the Premiership and nodded the usual “I’ll try my best.” Others were more calculated. I actually got a response that “Santa’s magic for sports teams gradually declines after Christmas day.”

This year, I was once again promised that the big man would do his best. I’m going to take him at his word with how things have gone so far. Could this be our year? With a focus on City and Arsenal, our transition period over the last 18 months has been expedited. Surprising to many, we are back in the mix. Now is the time of year to use a little magic to turn doubters into believers.
