Champions League Group Play: Liverpool 3 – 2 AC Milan – Player Ratings

European nights at Anfield are back!

Match Ratings

Alisson – 7

Can’t help but feel he was a bit ambushed, end of the first half. But I’ve seen him save shots like that first goal conceded loads of times. Maybe a bit guilty of judging him off his own high standard.

TAA – 7

Created loads down the right. Will get some stick about not getting back on the goals conceded but that’s part and parcel in the current setup.

Matip – 6

Ironically at his best in Milan’s box. Played big parts in both goals, ball watching on the first and missing the overlapping run on the second.

Gomez – 6

Tough spot to have your first start in nearly a year. Especially tough when plugged in on your weak side. Did loads of things well. Also broke the high line on both goals conceded. Good to see him back. Here’s to continued good health…

Robbo – 7

It felt like he was single-handedly responsible for about 90% of the pressure up until Liverpool’s opening goal. Standard, dogged work rate throughout.

Fabinho – 7

Had a few moments to forget, trying to cover for Trent on Milan’s counters, but was involved in just about everything that disrupted Milan’s midfield play.

Keita – 7

Loads of people post-match asking what Naby brings. Then Opta tweets that he was statistically the most efficient midfielder out of ALL round 1 performers in the Champions League. I’m somewhere in between camps. Yeah. So that’s where we’re at with this…

Henderson – 8

Created the most chances. Buries the game-winner on a ridiculous half volley.

Jota – 6

Drifted in and out of the game in large swaths. Makes you wonder if he’s just more effective centrally.

Divock – 7

Not sure if I’m more surprised he got the start or that he wasn’t the worst performance on the pitch in red. Surprisingly focused throughout (hat tip for the assist*), Unsurprisingly led the team in giveaways. Injured or just ready to come off and go home? You decide. Ahh, Divock. Bless.

Mo – 7

His last penalty miss was 4 years ago. That’s four years before Ronaldo’s last penalty miss. That’s all I got…

THE SUBS

Mane – 6

Clearly in his own head at this point.

Thiago – 7

Nearly as many completed passes as touches. Mad. Bonus point for the crazy eyes when Hendo skips in the game-winner.

Jones – 7

Gave us a reminder that we have a threat from range. Looked extremely bright on the ball after being out of first-team action for some time.
