What Are The Expectations?
It was the first loss, first goal conceded, and first time Slot Ball has been unable to come up with an answer. It’s only a couple of games into a young season but the Nottingham Forest game would not have been my bet on when reality set in. This is going to be a year of transition. We briefly dreamed the transition would be flawless and Slot Ball would take the league by storm. The bigger probability was a year of growing pains and frustration. So what are the expectations as we come back to reality? There was no major overhaul in the summer, outside of the signing of Chiesa. Should our expectations be more of a wait for when Slot’s style overlays the remnants of Klopp’s Gegenpress?

Tempering Expectations
With major contracts on the table or yet to be offered to key pieces of the current team should our expectations be tailored to either an acceptance to a changing of the guard? FSG isn’t keen to hand out contracts to older players no matter how talismanic they may be. Also, the future of TAA is undecided. As a fan, I feel it fits into a category where one of the best-attacking RBs in the world could disappear to one of the continental giants. That’s not something we should want to expect. Liverpool becoming a selling club would definitely be one of the last things we want out of this situation.

Overall this season is going to be one of discovery. How fast Slot Ball settles, and how quickly the behind-the-scenes contract work is resolved are starting to become the bigger questions. Expectations-wise, I just want us to play. Maybe it feels like an expectation for when you’re watching and cheering your child playing one of their rec games on a weekend: “Have fun. Do your best.” Yes, the pressure and level are much higher, but in a world of transition, it might just be what we need to expect to be able to keep smiling on the weekend.
