Champions League GPR1: Liverpool 2 – 0 Midtjylland – Player Ratings

I thought the Ajax game was ugly. I take it back. The top of the group never looked so sexy.

RATINGS

Becks – 8

Probably the most important player in this side right now. Exudes confidence, directs traffic, and comes out and snuffs out the danger.

TAA – 9
Massive tonight. Integral in the creation of both goals. Fizzed in dangerous balls all night.

Fabs – N/A
Oh ffs.

Gomez – 7
Figuring out his limitations. Did well to keep it simple and solid despite some nervy moments.

Robertson – 6
Been a while since someone got the better of him. Dreyer caused problems. Continually got in behind.

Milner – 6
Starting to look legged. I’m not saying. I’m just saying….

Henderson – 6
I don’t think the double pivot suits his strengths but he did a job before the planned halftime substitution.

Shaqiri – 7
Quietly excellent. Deserves an assist for the assist on the opening goal. Had several balls that totally unlocked Midtjylland.

Minamino – 6
Probably best as a 10? Maybe? I dunno. Frustrating seeing the potential without the end product. Looked crowded out at times. Lost at others.

Jota – 7
A good bit ahead of the rest of our depth. Even when he’s not at his best he’s getting in dangerous positions, scoring tap-ins.

Origi – 5
I’m not saying he’s trash. I’m just saying if you had rolled out a trash bin in his spot, the hold-up play wouldn’t have been worse.

SUBSTITUTES

Rhys Williams – 7 (‘30)
Played more Champions League games than Everton. And hasn’t looked bad doing it. Silver lining.

Gini – 6 (‘46)
Came in as the formation changed to play the deep-lying anchor role. He’s a major reason counterattacks became much smoother and more prominent second half.

Mane – 6 (‘60)
Work rate, physicality, positioning all there. Failed to make much of an impact though.

Salah – 7 (‘60)
Playing at another level right now. Even off the bench. Has the pace and power to take the top off a backline. Got ahold of that pen, eh?

Firmino – N/A (‘81)
Tee’d up by Trent. Banged it up Venmore Street.
