Too Early Summer Assessment
The 2026–27 Premier League season marks a fresh start for Liverpool Football Club. Coming off a disappointing fifth-place finish and the sudden departure of manager Arne Slot, the Reds truly are in a transitional era.
Andoni Iraola is the new man at the helm, and this summer has already proven to be choppy. Club legend Mo Salah has departed after the end of his Liverpool career, Konate has headed to Real Madrid, and Liverpool must look not only to their top-tier talent—including major additions from last summer like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak—but also to players who may now be asked to take on bigger roles.

A New Era Under Iraola
Summer spending has been less bombastic than last year. Victor Munoz became the first new signing of the Iraola era after joining from Osasuna, while Jeremy Jacquet also arrived this summer after his move from Rennes had been agreed earlier in the year.
Iraola is known for a high-intensity, cohesive system, so it remains to be seen how the big Slot signings from last year factor in, or whether youth players like Rio step forward further as the system develops.
The Tactical Priorities
Tactically, Iraola must focus on two main priorities: fixing the team’s defensive weaknesses on the counter-attack and sharpening their movement in the final third. Conceding early and chasing games needs to be a thing of the past.
Dominik Szoboszlai offers crucial stability—further anchored by his recent long-term contract extension—but the squad will inevitably face an adjustment period as they adapt to Iraola’s new pressing triggers and defensive duties.

What Should Liverpool Expect?
Given the fierce competition at the top of the league, Liverpool’s realistic target for the upcoming season is securing a top-four finish and remaining in the Champions League. We don’t want to see yet another season where the fate of that tournament is in the balance.
While the squad boasts exceptional individual talent, mastering a new tactical system usually comes with early-season inconsistency.
Can a genuine title challenge remain possible? Certainly.
City, Chelsea and United are all settling into new managers and systems. But, as always, it remains to be seen if the team adapts quickly to Iraola’s system and tightens up at the back.
