Matip out for season!

Some bad news to pass out before the games start. Joel Matip suffered a thigh injury on Saturday against Crystal Palace thatst going to require surgery which will end his season. This obviously leaves Dejan Lovren as Virgil van Dijk’s center back partner for the rest of the year. I personally think Lovren has been better than Matip but this is no doubt a huge loss.

This leaves Ragnar Klavan as the backup amd even if we wanted to put Joe Gomez in that spot but he obviously is out with an ankle injury that will keep him out for a few weeks at least.

Plus this takes away any ideas of going to 3 in the back. That worked really well for us on Saturday, its not something I would regularly want us to do but it’s an good option to have in your back pocket depending on the opponent.

We wish Joel the best in his recovery and look forward to seeing him next season and no doubt will be missed.

This is also another example as to why another Center Back needs to be on Jurgen Klopp’s shopping list for this summer.
